(1872-1953) American actress who was a major star in popular theatre at the turn of the twentieth century. From 1892 to 1896, she was a protege of manager Charles Frohman and frequently co-starred with John Drew. In 1905 she starred in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and thereafter was associated with Barrie, leading to her being labeled "the Barrie heroine." She appeared as Phoebe in Barrie's "Quality Street," Maggie in "What Every Woman Knows," and Babbie in "The Little Minister."

Arliss, George
(1868-1946) Turn-of-the-century British actor who followed a successful career on the American stage with a career in movies. Prior to 1901, he appeared in many local productions in England, arriving on the London stage around 1900. In 1901 he toured the United States with Mrs. Campbell, starring as Cayley Drummle in Arthur Wing Pinero's The Second Mrs. Tanqueray and the Duke of Olphertts in Pinero's The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith. He then starred in several David Belasco productions. In 1904 he joined Minnie Maddern Fiske's company. Among his most noted performances were Judge Block in Ibsen's Hedda Gabbler, Langdon Mitchell's The New York Idea and The Devils. A long career in both silent and sound films ensued.

Bernhardt, Sarah
(1844-1923) French actress who achieved worldwide stardom in tragic roles. Born Henriette Rosine Bernard, she first took the stage in 1862 at the Comedie Francaise (the French National Theatre). In 1869 she gained notice in Coppee's La Passant, then in 1872 became France's leading actress with performances as Cordelia in King Lear and the Queen in Victor Hugo's Ruy Blas. In 1879 she appeared on the London stage in Racine's Phèdre. Subsequently, she toured throughout Europe and the United States. Her most famous performances were in Marguerite Gautier's Our Lady of the Camelias, Edmund Rostand's L'Aiglon (as the King of Rome), Marivaux's Lorenzaccio, and several dramas written specifically for her by the French playwright Sardou - Dora (1877), Fedora (1882), Theodora (1884), La Tosca (1887), Cleopatre (1890) and La Sorcière (1903). She was also famous for her 1899 London performance as Hamlet (pictured). In 1893 she took control of a French theatre company and renamed it Theatre Sarah Bernhardt. She was noted in her later years for her great voice, artwork and film acting. On the anecdotal side, she is reputed to have slept in a coffin and owned a pet tiger.

Betterton, Thomas
(c1635-1710) English actor, the top star of Restoration-period theatre. He was associated with the playwright William Congreve, in whose Love for Love and The Way of the World he starred.

Booth, Edwin
(1833-1893) Premier American actor of the late 1800s, famous for his Shakespearean roles, particularly Romeo, Richard III and Hamlet. He was said to have had a beautiful voice and a mesmerizing, intelligent presence. His most famous performances were as Brutus in Julius Caesar with his father, Junius, as Caesar and his brother, John Wilkes Booth, as Cassius. Ironically, John Wilkes Booth later assassinated Abraham Lincoln. The subsequent furor caused Edwin to suffer financially and close the theatre company he had founded. In another famous performance, he alternated with Sir Henry Irving in the roles of Iago and Othello at the Lyceum in 1881. He was also a founding member of the Players Club, whose members were important figures in the New York theatre community. Interestingly, most critics were banned from the club.

Burbage, Richard
(c1567-1619) Along with Edward Alleyn, one of the top actors of the Elizabethan stage and the original portrayer of many of Shakespeare's most famous characters, including Richard III, Hamlet, Othello and King Lear. His acting career is believed to have begun in the 1580s with a company called the Admiral's Men at the Theatre. His father James and brother Cuthbert were key figures behind the Blackfriars and Globe theatres, and through the Globe Richard became associated with Shakespeare. He also acted in the works of other Elizabethan playwrights such as Ben Jonson and Thomas Kyd.

(1717-1779) English actor and manager. As the most famous actor of his era and as the manager of the Drury Lane theatre from 1747 to 1776, he changed English theatre from a declamatory exercise for the aristocracy into a realistic experience intended for everyone. He also popularized and restored Shakespeare's plays. His Hamlet is considered one of the best. Reinhardt, Max
(1873-1943) Austrian director and producer. Advocating a brand of theatricalism as a counterpoint to the naturalism of the day, he directed several spectacular productions of classics in Berlin and London prior to World War I, most notably Oedipus Rex. During the 1920s he directed many productions in Berlin. He also founded the Salzburg Festival. In the 1930s he migrated to America, where he directed a film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
